The one who plants trees, knowing that he will never sit in their shade, has at least started to understand the meaning of life.” -unknown

Oregon’s climate is warming due to human-caused global heating. Last month Climate Action Tigard (CAT) members joined theTigard Library, Friends of Trees and over 30 other volunteers to enhance the landscape behind the Tigard Library for current and future generations. The species of the 20 large-stock trees were chosen in anticipation of Oregon’s changing hardiness zones. (Recently 39% of Oregon has shifted to warmer hardiness zones.) As new trees grow over the decades, we must be sure to plant species that will survive in a hotter and drier climate.

Blue Oak, Quaking Aspen, Oregon White Oak, Ponderosa Pine, Incense Cedar, Bald Cypress and Coastal Live Oak were selected by Mario Catani, Friends of Trees’ Neighborhood Trees Specialist for Washington county. These species can tolerate 110 degree summer temperatures, which are becoming more common in Tigard. We must look to the future and be sure our actions are resilient in the face of the rapidly changing environment. We have little time to reduce the harm caused by the last century of human activity.
